Why You Should Understand Medicare Surcharges
Nov 28, 2023
Medicare surcharges will be added to your monthly Part B and Part D payments beginning in March 2022 if your overall household income is more than $182,000 or if you are a single individual with an expenditure of more than $91,000. The official name for Medicare premiums is the "Income-Related Quarterly Adjustment Amounts,"; however, the term "surcharge" is more commonly used (IRMAA). The Department of Social Security bases Medicare surcharges on your MAGI from the two previous tax years to establish your Medicare Part B premium. To minimize Medicare surcharges, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), get Medigap insurance, or engage in tax planning to lower your MAGI.
